Gait analysis laboratory system
Analysis of human gait is one of the first applications ever developed using Codamotion systems, and is at the core of our company’s vision to use movement analysis to enhance lives.
A traditional gait analysis system comprises at least two CX1 sensor units placed either side of a walkway. Every unit measures in 3D, and additional units can be added for a longer walkway.
Since marker identities are pre-labelled, the process of producing standardised gait reports is highly automated.
Those who haven’t seen a Codamotion system before are often surprised by how quickly a full printed report appears, within moments of the movement occurring.

3D movement analysis in a confined space
Thanks to unique masked linear array (MLA) technology, each CX1 sensor unit has a very wide field of view – much larger than cameras that use lenses, and measures in 3D without any calibration required.
This means they perform well in confined spaces such as corridors, aircraft cockpits, and most famously on board the International Space Station.
Compared to measurement technologies that depend on reflected light, the automated marker labelling process in a Codamotion system is not distracted by the kind of reflective background clutter that often exists in such environments.

CX1 SENSOR UNIT
Single CX1 unit to measure 3D coordinates.

Portable Outdoor System
Codamotion outdoor systems are portable, quick to set up, and deliver reliable real-time 3D measurements and totally automatic labelling of marker identities, even in bright sunlight.
An outdoor system comprises one or more CXS sensor units, connected to a data hub, together with CXS markers to place on the subject being measured. The choice of data hub depends on the research goals.
As always, the ODIN software platform is used (typically on a laptop) as the command centre for the system; and to provide the analyses which automatically turn raw XYZ marker data into meaningful measurements of objects, humans and animals.
Components
CXS MARKERS
CXS Markers or marker clusters on the subject to be measured.
CXS SENSOR UNIT
One or more CXS sensor units. Every unit measures coordinates in 3D.

ODIN SOFTWARE

Portable Indoor System
Every Codamotion unit is pre-calibrated in the factory to measure coordinates in 3D and in real-time, with fully automatic marker labelling programmed into the hardware.
This makes Codamotion systems portable, and very rapid to set up with no on-site calibration required. Complete 3D analysis can be achieved using a single Codamotion CX1 unit, and additional units can be added to extend the volume and ensure markers stay visible during complex movements.

CX1 SENSOR UNIT
One or more CX1 sensor units. Every unit measures coordinates in 3D.

Real-time control
Codamotion systems measure the real-time 3D locations of small markers whose identities are uniquely defined in the hardware.
There is no latency associated with the marker labelling task, since labels are 100% fixed in the hardware, 100% of the time.
Together with portability and quick setup time, this makes Codamotion systems ideal for real-time control experiments in biofeedback, robotics, industrial automation, and human-computer interaction.

Additional inputs
The ready-labelled 3D coordinates from Codamotion systems can be synchronised and combined with data from many other sources, including analogue inputs. All of this synchronised data is available through one common API, directly into your own applications.
CODAHUB

RTNet SDK for real-time streaming of pre-labelled XYZ position data into your real-time application.
Treadmill analysis
The robustness to background clutter, speed of setup, and automated marker labelling mean that Codamotion systems represent a turnkey solution for 3D analysis of human movement on a treadmill.
For bilateral analysis two CX1 units are typically used. Each unit measures in 3D, and the units are placed either side of the subject so that they have good visibility of marker clusters placed on the limbs of interest.
The ODIN software provides for fully automated analysis and reporting.

Fully-featured research laboratory system
A Codamotion system is the essential workhorse of any laboratory requiring a 3D movement analysis facility for multiple research projects.
Systems are highly modular and can rapidly be reconfigured for different tasks and volumes of capture, with fully automated marker labelling.
Organisations often have multiple CXS or CX1 sensor units and multiple data hubs so that different groups can carry out different experiments at the same time. Sensor units can be freely and quickly moved between systems to extend measurement volumes as required.
The ODIN software acts not only as an analysis and data archiving platform, but also a useful teaching tool for education of new users about the basic building blocks of 3D movement analysis.
The device integration features of CodaHubs make it easy to integrate a variety of data sources alongside 3D measurements, all ready to see and analyse using ODIN.
ODIN is also ideal for sharing data and protocol ideas with colleagues and the movement analysis community, using the unique ‘motion bundle’ concept.
Advanced users can import their own analysis algorithms as Python scripts, or use dialogue boxes to configure the analysis building blocks already provided. New users can load ready-made analysis protocols and be ready to go right away.
